MD Uses Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy to Curb Opioid Use

The statistics grow increasingly alarming: 64,000 deaths a year due to overdose with more than a half million forecasted for the next decade.

The opioid crisis has reached fever pitch, with government leaders turning serious attention to prescription painkiller abuse and media coverage increasing in kind.

An international study labeled America as the No. 1 consumer in the world and one prominent economist recently produced evidence these drugs are impacting the U.S. workforce. Doctors have received some of the blame for seeding the opioid crisis by prescribing too much too often to address acute pain.

Primary care physicians have worked in recent years to change that. Like his peers, Vikas Agarwal, MD, Cert. MDT, is working to curb the risks of opioid abuse by reducing his patients use of and dependency on it to relieve pain. He's found a solution in physical therapy, particularly the McKenzie Method® of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy® (MDT). Read more.

Mechanical Diagnosis Helps Practice Build Its Own Network

Many, if not most, private practice owners consider participation in a third-party administrator network essential for sustainable business. That's the model most clinicians and patients are used to. But, what if a private practice could negotiate its own reimbursement processes with payers? That may sound unusual, but it might not be for long. For Integrated Mechanical Care (IMC) and CEO Chad Gray, it's already been happening for nearly 10 years. That's because a decade ago, they launched a strategic plan focused on large, self-insured employers. Read more.

How Embracing 'Failure' Can Build a Winning Practice

Physical therapists, like all health care providers, share a dedication to one thing: helping people. You got into the business to improve, even save, lives. Of course, this noble dedication can lead to frustration when you can't help a patient and be unfairly considered “failure." But, Jane Borgehammar, PT, Dip.
